Hypnosis Facts:
  1. Hypnosis works. It has been accepted in medicine and psychiatry for well over 100 years and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in many scientific studies.
  2. Hypnosis is a naturally-occurring state that is a combination of intense concentration and relaxation. This is called a trance, or trance state. Some people liken it to daydreaming or meditation. It is not, however, sleep.
  3. The power to be hypnotized resides in you. No one can hypnotize you against your will.
  4. You cannot be made to do anything under hypnosis that you do not want to do. Hypnosis, therefore, can only work if you and the hypnotherapist agree with the suggestions you will be given.
  5. Hypnotherapy is the treatment that is conducted while you are hypnotized.
  6. Almost everyone can be hypnotized. For some people it comes naturally. Others have to practice at it before they can fully utilize it.
  7. Dr. Novello will perform a brief test of your own hypnotizabiity before you begin hypnotherapy.
  8. Men and women are equally "hypnotizable."
  9. Children, surprisingly to many people, are generally very good subjects for hypnosis.
  10. Hypnosis is not a panacea - and it cannot substitute for your true desire to change. Your motivation is crucial; without it any progress will be limited.
  11. Dr. Novello teaches self-hypnosis to his patients. This is the best way to maintain your progress.
  12. Hypnosis is safe. However, people with certain psychiatric conditions should probably not be hypnotized. This is why Dr. Novello takes a psychiatric and medical history before using hypnosis.
  13. While hypnosis can reduce or even eliminate your need for certain medications, such as painkillers, this step should only be taken upon the advice of your treating physician.
  14. The number of hypnosis sessions needed will be very few. One of the great advantages of hypnosis is that it is a short-term treatment. After your initial evaluation, Dr. Novello will be able to give you a good estimate of the number of sessions you will probably require.
